My neighbourhood is full of cats. They prance around my yard and rub up against our patio door just to drive my dog crazy. They fight all night... every night. They scoot across the sidewalk in front of you just to give you a heart attack. And... they stalk me. Seriously. Maybe not all of them but there's this one cat that just won't leave me alone....

I love baking. It's such a relaxing activity. I often go into a reflective state of mind. I could never be meditative while baking; my mind often drifts to memories of long ago. It pauses at happy moments, it floats through sad ones. It circles around memories of friends and family. It ebbs and flows through all the places that my hectic every day life doesn't permit me to visit....

I am an introspective person. I am self-reflective almost to a fault. Some people would say that being self-reflective is a positive characteristic... that it's tough to be evaluative of oneself. However, I think there is a serious detriment to being too self-reflective; where self-reflection takes over the individual and smothers their very existence. There isn't a moment in my life when I'm not working to change some aspect or improve some area of my life.

Well, here we are again... a few days away from Easter! I'm trying to pack a basket that is not 100% junk (candy or dollar-store-find kind).... so what to include?? Here are my ideas so far:
  • Food:
    • Trail Mix - buy in bulk and divvy up into little Easter themed baggies (you can get both at Bulk Barn)
    • Dried fruit bars (try Sun Rype Fruit to Go at Dominion)
    • Sugar-free Gum - try the new multi-flavoured kinds
    • Spring & Easter themed cookie cutters (Bulk Barn; Walmart)

Tasty Tuesday - A Raisin Bread Adventure!

 
So, as part of my little Countdown to Easter, I wanted to share a fun brunch idea with you - something tasty you could make with the kids on Good Friday or Easter Sunday AM....

But, before I get to that... a story. 

Recently, I was given a sample of Sun-Maid Raisin Cinnamon Swirl bread. Yes, it was yummy (DH even ate it for dessert!), but that is not the be-all-n'-end-all of this tale....

OK...

You see, the bread was so good, we knew we were going to get more. And, we were going to get that first loaf with the "full value" coupons we had also received! Oh! the excitement! They were placed with care on the shelf above the counter, right next to the pantry (yes, this detail will matter).

Then, one day last week, remembering the recipe attached to the coupons, I picked up the parcel. As I grabbed the waffle toast recipe, a terrible, terriblething happened: the coupons slid out of my hand and magically aligned with the crack between the counter top and the wall, and they fell in! 

They were.... gone!

For a moment, I will not kid you, I was shell shocked....

]]>Tue, 27 Mar 2012 19:15:19 GMT<![CDATA[Unexpected Learning]]> A couple months ago, my husband and I started to put our baby on more of a schedule. We planned out times for her feedings and her naps with hopes that the structure would help her sleep better in the evenings.

We wrote the schedule on a whiteboard. The permanent schedule is in blue and we add the adjusted times in red. For example, if the baby is up at 6:30 am instead of 7:00 we record the modified time on the schedule.

The other day I was preparing the baby's breakfast in the kitchen when my daughter asked....
